金属氧化物电阻片是避雷器的核心元件，电阻片的电气性能决定了避雷器的电气性能。避雷器由一定数量的电阻片通过串并联接而成，利用电阻片良好的非线性伏安特性，赋予避雷器雷电防护的功能。避雷器实际是一个“高通低阻”的放电器，并联在线路绝缘子两端。正常工作电压下，呈现高电阻，使线路与大地保持绝缘状态；当有较高电压的雷电波时，避雷器呈现低阻状态，将雷电流泄放到大地，从而保护设备或线路绝缘子。
