甲基叔丁基醚，英文缩写为MTBE（methyl tert-butyl ether），溶点-109℃，沸点55.2℃，是一种无色、透明、高辛烷值的液体，具有醚样气味，是生产无铅、高辛烷值、含氧汽油的理想调合组份，作为汽油添加剂已经在全世界范围内普遍使用。它不仅能有效提高汽油辛烷值，而且还能改善汽车性能，降低排气中CO含量，同时降低汽油生产成本。另外，MTBE还是一种重要化工原料，如通过裂解可制备高纯异丁烯。MTBE是含氧量为18.2%的有机醚类。它的蒸汽比空气重，可沿地面扩散，与强氧化剂共存时可燃烧。MTBE的纯度约为97%~99.5%，分子式为：CH3OC(CH3)3
